Karthik is a science communicator at IISC, Bangalore. In a very elaborate session, he changed the way I approach writing. Here are the notes:
- Build a narrative.
- Don’t binge write; form a practice and do a little everyday.
- Stories form collective hypotheses.
- Neurological link between reading an action word and actually doing it (same parts of the brain get activated).
- ABT Framework: And (establish characters and context), But (introduce conflict, the twist), Therefore (Conflict resolution).
- Arrangement of paragraphs: summarise each paragraph in one line and look at logical flow between those sentences.
- Paragraph structure: Transition, Topic Sentence, Expand, Point / Conclusion and focus on coherence.
- Sentence structure: identify subject, verb and relationships. What exactly are you talking about? Introduce familiar then new information.
- Reduce nominalization unless necessary.
- Use a clause to start a sentence.
- Flow is optimal.
